Spirituals are a genre of Christian music that originated among enslaved African Americans in the United States during the C18 and C19, later evolving into the blues and gospel. Often rooted in biblical stories, they evoke pain, perseverance, hope and even joy against a background of extreme hardship.
PROGRAMME
18 Spirituals arr. Leon Bosch
Nobody knows de trouble I’ve seen
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child
I know de Lord’s laid his hands on me
Swing low, sweet chariot
Ev’ry time I feel de spirit
By an’By
Deep river
I got a robe
I want to be ready
Death’s gwineter lay his cold Icy hand on me
Go down
My little soul’s goin’ to shine
I am bound for the Kingdom
I’m workin’ on my buildin’
Roll Jordan roll
I’m goin’ to lay down my heavy load
My soul’s been anchored in de Lord
